Need spinners on October 20th

*CROSS POSTED*

I'm the children's librarian at the Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion, and on Saturday, October 20th we're having an outside Halloween get-together for the kids. So far, the itinerary includes:

a bounce house
face painting (thank you, Calamity Jane!)
disgusting edibles for the kiddies (dirt, bleeding heart, slime, blood)
Red Lion fire company talking trick-or-treating safety
lots of storytelling
kids coming in costume
crafts with Caitlin's Smiles (that one rocks so much!)
possible mummy wrapping (toilet paper)

1. I'm looking to flesh it out more, particularly with spinners, but UNLIT. I'm looking for flags, ribbons, streamers, or any such attached to the normal spin gear. Oh, and I guess the people to actual spin them as well would be nice.
2. We'd neeed drummers to, because spinning to silence sucks.

If you're willing to volunteer your time, please let me know, and the sooner you can, the sweeter it'll be. Again, it's Saturday, October 20th, tentatively from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

I thank you all. Peace out.

~Jim, the children's librarian, Red Lion, PA~

You might be from Pennsylvania if....

You might be from Pennsylvania if..

You've never referred to Philadelphia as anything but "Philly."
And New Jersey has always been "Jersey."

You refer to Pennsylvania as "PA" (pronounced Pee-Ay).
How many other states do that?

You know what "Punxsutawney Phil" ( A Ground Hog ) is, and what it means if
he sees his shadow.

The first day of buck and the first day of doe season are school holidays.

You can use the phrase "fire hall wedding reception" and not even bat an eye.

You can't go to a wedding without hearing the "Chicken Dance," at least 1
Polka and either an Italian song (sung in Italian,) or "Hava Nagila."

At least 5 people on your block have electric "candles" in all or most of
their windows all year long.

You know what a "Hex sign" is.

You know what a "State Store" is, and your out of state friends find it
incredulous that you can't purchase liquor at the mini-mart.

You own only three condiments "salt, pepper and Heinz ketchup".

Words like "hoagie", "crick", "chipped ham", "sticky buns", "shoo-fly pie",
"pierogies" and "tastykake" actually mean something to you.

You can eat cold pizza (even for breakfast) and know others who do the same.
(Those from NY find this "barbaric".)

You not only have heard of Birch Beer, but you know it comes in several
colors: Red, White, Brown, Gold.

You know several places to purchase or that serve Scrapple, Summer Sausage
(Lebanon Bologna), and Hot Bacon Dressing.

You can eat a cold soft pretzel from a street vendor without fear and enjoy
it.

You know the difference between a cheese steak & a pizza steak sandwich and a
Primanti's, and know that you can't get a really good one outside PA.

You live for summer, when street and county fairs signal the beginning of
funnel cake season.

Customers ask the waitress for "dippy eggs" for breakfast.

You know that Blue Ball, Intercourse, Climax, Bird-in-Hand, Beaver, Moon,
Virginville, Paradise, Mars, and Slippery Rock are PA towns.

You know what a township, borough, and commonwealth is.

You can identify drivers from New York, New Jersey, Ohio,or other neighboring
states by their unique and irritating driving habits.

A traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a horse-drawn carriage on the
highway in Lancaster County.

You know several people who have hit deer more than once.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your female passengers know how to
use them.

You still keep kitty litter, starting fluid, de-icer, or a snow brush in your
trunk, even if you live in the south.

Driving is always better in winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

As a kid you built snow forts and leaf piles that were taller than you were.

Your graduating class consisted of mostly Polish, German, & Italian names.

"You guys" and "ynz" is a perfectly acceptable reference to a group of men &
women.

You know how to respond to the question "Djeetyet?" (Didyoueatyet?)

You learned to pronounce Bryn Mawr, Wilkes-Barre, Schuylkill, Bala Cynwyd,
Conshohocken, and Monongahela.

You know what a "Mummer" is, and are disappointed if you can't catch at least
highlights of the parade.

You actually understand these jokes and send them on to other Pennsylvanians.

Pennsyltucky - born and (im)bred

I just discovered this tribe and thought I'd say hello. I grew up in Mt. Pleasant Mills (Snyder county) and went to Middleburg High School and Susquehanna University. After college, I managed to escape to Philly though the entirety of my family is still trapped in the murky confines of Snyder and Perry counties.

I recently wrote a book about my childhood in central PA called Tiny Cracker Zoo and set up my own website to share excerpts (www.christophermaster.com). I googled "Pennsyltucky" because I use it in my subtitle and was extremely amused to find that there's a whole tribe set up around the word, the region, the state of mind. I hope to make at least a few acquaintances on the board!

Take care,
Chris

tunnhis a gem i'd like to share w/ all you west of the latrobe tunnels on the turnpike, the unofficial e/w dividing line. back in my day, there was pittsburgh and philly and evevrything else in between inc. the capitol. which we fig. was only in that spot to keep the folks happy. cause life was very different east and west of the allegheny mts. to the foreigner it was a death sentence to dare call a burgher from philly,
" like whats the diff? it's all the same?" hello? does frisco like to be afiliated with LA? so here was how it was from our neck of the woods.

Yunz are from Picksburgh really the sw area if:

You didn't have a spring break in high school.
You walk carefully when it is "slippy" outside.
You often go down to the "crick."
You've told your children to "red up" their rooms
You can remember telling your little brother/sister to stop being so "nebby". or called them a Jagoff"
You've gotten hurt by falling into a "jaggerbush".
Your mother or grandmother has been seen wearing a "babushka" on her head.
You've "warshed" the clothes.
I ask you to hand me one of those "Gum-Bands" you actually know what I'm talking about.
You know you can't drive too fast on the back roads, because of the deer.
You know Beaver Valley, Turtle Creek, Moon, Mars, Slippery Rock, Greentree, Cokeburg, and New Castle are names of towns. (and you've been to most, if not all, of them.)
A girl walks up to three of her girl friends and says, "HEY YENZ GUYS"
You hear "you guyses," and don't think twice. (Example..."you guyses house is nice")
You know the three rivers by name and understand that "The Point" isn't just on a writing instrument.
Someone refers to "The Mon" or "The Yough" and you know exactly what they're talking about.
You remember the blizzard of 1996 (or 1976, or 1939, or...) and remember not being able to go outside because the snow was over your head and you would have suffocated.
Someone starts the chant, "Here we go Still-ers!" and you join in, in the proper cadence, and waving the appropriately colored towel.
Bob Prince and "There's a bug loose on the rug." or Rosey Rosewells' "Open the window Aunt Minnie, here it comes!" hold special meaning for you!
You've either eaten a Farkleberry Tart or know someone who has.
You drink pop, eat hoagies, love pierogies, and one of your favorite sandwiches actually has french fries on it. (ah, yes!)
You know what a "still mill" is.
You expect temps in the winter to be record breaking cold and temps in the summer to be record breaking hot.
You know what Eat 'N Park is and frequently ate breakfast there at 2:00 AM after the bar closed and made fun of people.
You order "dippy eggs" in a restaurant and get exactly what you wanted.
You spent your summers, or a school picnic, at Kennywood, Sand Castle, or Idlewild.
You've been to the Braun's Bread Plant or Story Book Forest for a school field trip.
"Chipped ham" was always in your refrigerator when you were growin up.
You refuse to buy any condiments besides Heinz unless a Pittsburgh athlete's picture is on the side of the container.
Franco, Roberto, and Mario don't need last names and you can recite their exploits by heart.
Food at a wedding reception consists of Rigatoni, Stuffed Cabbage, Sauerkraut and Polska Kielbasa. (yummy, yummy...YUM!)
You'll send this on to family and friends who used to live in the Pittsburgh Area as well as to those who have never lived there, just so they can appreciate how different Western PA really is!
I wonder how many of Yunz guys actually understood all dat? Some folks just don't get dem things.

thanks again to alison for turning me on to this tribe.! you guys just wake up memories and allow me to share them.

so, being new to this 'tribe'... just wanted to get an idea of where people are/were actually from without having to go and look at the 13 other profiles that make up this group.

i'm originally from ashland (yes, home to the mother's memorial and anthracite museum, 5 minutes from centralia, etc.)

now i work in new york, ny... and live just outside of the big city in new jersey suburbs (yuck.)

the way it smells in new jersey sometimes, i really do miss pennsylvania...

Hello everyone. I have created a general interest tribe about Pennsylvania. I’m hoping that it will eventually develop into a tribe where we can exchange ideas and information about the culture, events and travel here in PA. I’m a native of the Pittsburgh region and I love taking time to explore the state and experience the various aspects of the state we live in.

Please join me and share your own experiences, knowledge, thoughts or local events with all of us.

Allrite Pennsyltuckians, it's time to break the mold. We've been pussyfooting around the Knoebel's idea for long eough. The days are long, the nights are longer....but the summer is wearing down. We've got less than a month and a half before the childhood notion of summer (aka: June-August) is over. Let's kick it into gear before we go another day of sitting around waiting for the possum stew to simmer whilest others are enjoying the luxury of a ride on the Phoenix, a round of bumper boats, and a delectable lunch of pierogies topped off with fantastical dessert of a slab o' ice cream between two waffles.

So step up Pennsyltuckians! When are your calendars free? What are your budgets? I'm taking it upon myself this week to call Knoebels and check on group discounts, etc. We can save money by carpooling and I'm gonna check the price of renting a van for a day! Sounds like a church youth group trip, eh? Well let's top it off with a round of drinks afterwards!

Either way, put down the PBR and the lager, step away from the possum stew, and take a look at your calendar and budget. It's time for Knoebles!!!!

For all those adrenaline junkies (or those who are easily coaxed into jumping out of high flying planes after a few irish car bombs)...

Anyone want to accompany me skydiving on July 16? I've never been before and I'll probably be going with SkyDive Philadelphia (www.skydivephiladelphia.com). Thus far they've got the cheapest rates at $165 per person, but I know if we get a group going we can get discounts.

It's my first time too, and company would be awesome!

Philadelphia Is "Shutting It Off"

The average American watches four hours of television a day.

This April 25-May 1, thousands of Philadelphians will bring that number down to zero.

It's all part of TV Turn-off Week, a national campaign to encourage children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities.

Locally, the Jaunt will celebrate its third-annual "TV Turn-off Weekend" April 28-May 1. The West Philadelphia storefront will feature live performances in its front window each night during "prime time" to give the neighborhood an entertainment alternative.

"I'm a 'CSI' addict," admits co-organizer Mike Benedetti. "This is a great chance for me to go cold turkey and kick the TV habit."

All events are free and open to the public.

TV TURN-OFF WEEKEND SCHEDULE:

* Thursday, April 28, 7pm--"Tales from the Triple Crown: Misadventures in America's Backcountry," a talk by Mike Benedetti. Mike is one of about forty people to have hiked the entire Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails: the "Triple Crown" of American backpacking. Join him for an evening of stories from his 8,000 miles of adventuring. Those planning to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2005 are especially invited to attend.

* Friday, April 29, 7-10pm--Philadelphians take the stage: IsiZulu language lessons with Sista Fayah; "Pregnancy Adventures" with doula Taina; poetry and freestyle from Philly's finest.

* Saturday, April 30, 7-10pm--Scranton takes the stage: "Scrantasm," the all! new! theatrical from Michael Paulukonis & Alicia Grega-Pikul; "Scrantonia," the light show, puppet show, robot show, and all things that Scranton, PA might have been, courtesy Conor McGuigan; "Shadows," shadow puppets by John Bert. Plus! performances by Frances Pikul, age 7, and Miranda Pikul, age 9. Don't miss it!!!

* Sunday, May 1, 3pm--Synthesizer legend Charles Cohen.

* Each night: the amazing visual phenomenon known only as "Realistic 3-D Effects."

Since it is election time, I have seen on the news that John Kerry and George Bush have made a few trips to Dah Area.

Did anybody see them?

or Cheney?

Just curious...

Shenandoah as Tourist Attraction

The following is from the "For the Tourist" section of a Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce brochure, probably printed in the late 1970's:

"Since they possess a number of specific attributes that render them distinctive and unusual, there are many points of interest in the Shenandoah area that have appeal to the tourist. The most striking of such features are the sphere-capped spires of the Catholic, Protestant, and Greek Churches that tower over the community, lending an almost foreign air. Interesting, also, are the large number of abandoned stripping operations, resulting in the mining landscape and featuring the barren and jumbled terrain, bizarre and grotesque, but, nevertheless, mesmeric in quality. Spoil banks and rock banks from coal preparation plants present the most awe-inspiring example of earth manipulation ever produced by man."
