Philadelphia Is "Shutting It Off"
The average American watches four hours of television a day.
This April 25-May 1, thousands of Philadelphians will bring that number down to zero.
It's all part of TV Turn-off Week, a national campaign to encourage children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities.
Locally, the Jaunt will celebrate its third-annual "TV Turn-off Weekend" April 28-May 1. The West Philadelphia storefront will feature live performances in its front window each night during "prime time" to give the neighborhood an entertainment alternative.
"I'm a 'CSI' addict," admits co-organizer Mike Benedetti. "This is a great chance for me to go cold turkey and kick the TV habit."
All events are free and open to the public.
TV TURN-OFF WEEKEND SCHEDULE:
* Thursday, April 28, 7pm--"Tales from the Triple Crown: Misadventures in America's Backcountry," a talk by Mike Benedetti. Mike is one of about forty people to have hiked the entire Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails: the "Triple Crown" of American backpacking. Join him for an evening of stories from his 8,000 miles of adventuring. Those planning to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2005 are especially invited to attend.
* Friday, April 29, 7-10pm--Philadelphians take the stage: IsiZulu language lessons with Sista Fayah; "Pregnancy Adventures" with doula Taina; poetry and freestyle from Philly's finest.
* Saturday, April 30, 7-10pm--Scranton takes the stage: "Scrantasm," the all! new! theatrical from Michael Paulukonis & Alicia Grega-Pikul; "Scrantonia," the light show, puppet show, robot show, and all things that Scranton, PA might have been, courtesy Conor McGuigan; "Shadows," shadow puppets by John Bert. Plus! performances by Frances Pikul, age 7, and Miranda Pikul, age 9. Don't miss it!!!
* Sunday, May 1, 3pm--Synthesizer legend Charles Cohen.
* Each night: the amazing visual phenomenon known only as "Realistic 3-D Effects."
